Located on top of the remnants of the ancient Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu and at the base of the active Pacaya volcano, Guatemala City (Guate) is known for its eternal Spring-like climate and high altitude. Although most international travelers arrive at the city's airport, many leave immediately in search of the country's well-known natural wonders. Guate's reputation for crime, pollution, and traffic has lingered as the city has begun to recreate itself in the last decades. The same can be said for its increasingly more present queer population. You'll find gay bars, dance clubs, and men's only saunas sprinkled throughout the central zones of the city.
The chaotic capital city is composed of 25 zones or neighborhoods. Zone 1 is the center of the city, and has many of the city's notable landmarks, historic buildings, gay nightlife, lively markets, and increasingly more chic dining options. Just south of downtown, Zone 4 is Guate's up-and-coming neighborhood where street art and bohemian eateries fill the trendy neighborhood. Zone 9 and 10 are the wealthiest neighborhood that houses some of Guatemala's fanciest residents where tree-lined boulevards, security gates, and mansions fill the sidewalks. This is also the place to find designer shops and upscale fine dining experiences.
A note on safety:
It is true that the younger generation is becoming more accepting of LGBTQ+ people, but we suggest keeping PDA to a minimum in public spaces to avoid harassment. Furthermore, while many of Guate's central and southern neighborhoods have seen a renaissance in the last couple of years, there are many neighborhoods that are still very dangerous. Specifically, 3, 5-8, 11, 12, 17 -21 should remain off-limits for tourists. When in doubt take a car service or taxi.
